It is the policy of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) to recommend that each organization which employs engineers provide formal assurance through organization policy that it will defend any suits or claims files against individual engineers of the organization, past or present, in connection with their professional activities on behalf of the employer, and will hold harmless individual engineers so involved.

NSPE believes that all engineers are and should be individually responsible for their professional services either through their employer or directly to a client. NSPE recognizes that in today’s complex technology it is often required that individual professional services be provided as part of a team effort and under the direction and responsibility of an organization, therefore, the individual engineer should be afforded a reasonable degree of protection by the organization which employs that engineer.
